Life in the Past 10 Days

Life is busy as usual, hense the lack of writing lately.

Here’s the run down of the past 10 days:

1. Remember this post when Savannah was 18 months old?  Well, the girl has suddenly decided that it’s time for the big girl bed and she’s been it for the past week!  It only took…over a year…I think she’s one of those kids she has to decide to do something for herself (so stubborn, not sure where she got that?). I imagine potty training will be the same way.

2.Naps are completely gone. And I don’t want them back.  She was sick this week and took naps for the first time in over a week and it totally screwed up her night time sleeping. She would go to bed at 10 or 11!  Not cool. So no, I don’t want nap time back if it’s going to be like this. I’ll take “rest time” where she reads herself books if that means she’ll actually go to bed at night.

3. Like I said, she was sick and sleeping horribly. So was Mark. It’s been a rough week taking care of two “babies” plus another midterm. I nearly lost my frustrated-exhausted-mommy-mind one night and I felt like a failure of a Mom. But, things are better now all around.  I guess we all have those breaking points, huh? Thank God for new days!

4. Oh yes, and more sleep issues (how many times have I written about this topic?): She won’t go to sleep unless some one is sitting at her door. Then she wakes up between 2-3am and insists that we sit at her door again until she is asleep. And if we don’t? She will keep getting up realizing that we aren’t there. And then I’m so annoyed and tired that I end up just going to sleep in her room. In short? She won’t sleep unless I’m in there. She’s always “scared” even if she has a million lights on and we are in the same room. And yes, she did this same thing when in the crib, it was just easier to fool her then. What to do?

5. We’ve looking at our housing options for when we move in the spring. Which, is pretty darn exciting to think about, especially since it may be a realistic option to buy instead of renting or even build because of the economy right now. We’re in the beginning stages of all this, so if you’ve got advice, lets here it!

So, that’s life right now. Busy.

I always have blog posts written out in my head, but they never make it to my keyboard. But, soon I hope to get up a blog post about mommy frustrations, modpodge shoes, feminism, adoption awareness month, more O Momma Recommendations, and whatever else life throws at me that’s worthy of writing about.

Enjoy your weekend!

ahh the sleep issues. We still have yet to get our “big girl” into a big girl bed. It is VERY frustrating but I try not to worry about it because she has some special needs and things have always taken us forever!
And we too wish we could buy instead of rent but in all honesty, my best advice is to be completely, 100% debt free. There are too many horror stories I’ve heard about not being out of debt and buying a house, hence why we’ll be living where we are for about 5 years unless I get a job. But I am thankful to stay home so I guess it’ll have to take that long! Anyways, hope all is well and have a good weekend! Hope everyone stays healthy!

Wow can not believe you are dealing with a real bed already! My son is 2 and I don’t even want to think about it. I am sure the sleep thing will pass as the adjustment from crib to bed is over. I hope everyone is feeling better. I have 2 sick kids too and we are still trying to get better!
Good luck with moving and all! All I have to say is if you are looking at homes already built, look at a lot!! And make a list of what really need vs want. And what you really need do not budge from that. You don’t want to regret it!

First, I’m so happy you are thinking ahead – that’s great. I admit, I’m probably more conservative because I know from experience what happens when you take on too much debt. It took me years to climb out of it. Then marrying a CPA who is a whiz with money really gave me a different education and view of money – I’m so grateful for that.

Just be very conservative with this first house. If I were you as soon as you can, find out how much your mortgage would be and then I’d start “making” the mortgage payment each month for pretend so you get an idea of how much it really will take out of your budget. Put it in a rainy day fund.

Have you guys paid off all our other debt? Do have at six months savings in the bank? How soon will you need new cars?

There is something to be said for renting for one year since you are just moving out on your own. Homeownership is really expensive – a lot of hidden costs. Plus renting lets you be sure you like that area and the schools. And by then you’ll be done with school and you guys will know more about exactly what money you have coming in and childcare, etc. It just seems to be it might be hard to make good judgments on things if they are based on hypothetical future events.

Maybe consider something small like a townhouse if you decide to buy. Our first place was one, we lived there three years (jeff for five since he owned it before I moved in). Then ended up selling it for a 35k profit when we built the big house.

I can tell you stories of water heaters going (even in new houses), the 6k bill we just paid to have maintenance done on the house that was pretty much nothing extra or cool – just small crap that had to be fixed. Lawn care, insurance, appliances, neighborhood dues, etc. It adds up.

good luck!!

Michelle has some excellent points! I remember when we bought the house we are in now, the hot water went after only 6 months in the house and it cost us several hundred dollars to replace. Houses, even new ones, are always more expensive than you expect! It is a great idea to start paying that mortgage (and utilities) into your savings now and see how life goes. (Pay a car payment in too so you have a realistic budget). Good luck!
