Summer Boredom

We’re bored. I guess that’s the thing about summer time, isn’t it?  Yea, it’s great to not have to do anything like school work, but doing nothing all the time gets boring. I’m sure you’ve heard your kids say it, too.

I’m running out of fun things to do with Savannah.  Originally I was trying to find us play dates to go to with kids at church or from school, or a toddler group at the library, but her nap time always interferes. We can’t really play outside unless it’s way early in the morning or near her bed time because it is so dang hot out there.  We can’t go any where because my car’s AC doesn’t work and we’d bake to death. Plus, I’m shy at meeting new people and paranoid.  I’m just little ole me, what if something happened to us? What would I do?

I’ve been trying to find new things for us to do together, like I bought some Color Wonder Finger Paints.  She likes it, but it only lasts for a few minutes before she’s ready to do something else.  Oh, the short attention span of a toddler.

Help?  How do you keep your kids entertained and interactive with them throughout the day?

We are facing summer boredom too! Noah usually loves to read and that takes up time because I’ll read more than just little children’s books to him, but it’s hard for me to read lately because of my eye thing! *sigh*

Do you guys have a back yard? I bring a ball, bubbles, and some snacks outside and Ky will play for atleast an hour. She walks around collecting rocks or we investigate things. She points out birds, or cats outside I act excited it works for us…LOL
We don’t watch TV, but we do listen to a ton of music and dance or colour. Do you have cue cards? Those are fun and educational.
Have you ever heard of the “Your baby can read” program? We just started it and its amazing!

OK, don’t take this the wrong way. I understand what you mean about the summer boredom. And I know you have a toddler. We have our 6th toddler right now and I’m currently “baking” our 7th. But don’t get into the habit of entertaining your little one all the time. Give her some good old fashioned blocks, balls, bubbles, sticks, whatever and let her use her imagination. You might find yourself surprised by why she will do on her own. Get her to help you fold clothes; if she’s able to wad a piece of paper you can show her how to fold a washcloth. Do you have a dishwasher? Let her put the plastic things in and be a helper. Toddlers are at an age that they LOVE to help. Take advantage of this and show her how. My four year old has been putting the soap in the dishwasher and turning it on since he was almost two (of course I use the little soap packets). Turn on some music and let her dance.

Ugh, the summer days can be soooooo long. My little guy really likes to play with a water table. It can be as easy as just a dishtub with a few inches of water and some measuring cups. Sometimes we put in some rice instead of water for a tactile change. You can use it in the bathtub if it’s too hot to play outside.
